Review: Tristar HybridCool KB-7645, cool on the road and freeze at the campsite

The Tristar HybridCool KB-7645 is a 41-litre hybrid cool box that combines two devices: on the road it cools thermo-electrically on 12V (up to 20 °C below ambient), while at the campsite it switches to a compressor on 230V and becomes a full freezer with a continuously adjustable temperature from +10 down to -15 °C. At 199 euros (down from 349) you get a travel cool box and a mini freezer in one. Downsides: at 18.5 kg it is heavy, and in freezer mode (energy label F) it draws a fair amount of power. Our verdict: 8.7/10.

We received this Tristar HybridCool KB-7645 to test on long drives, and took it along for the real work: hot afternoons at the campsite and that one beer that simply has to be ice cold. It is no toy cool box from the petrol station, but a serious appliance that quietly leads two lives: a cool box in the car, a freezer once you arrive. We explain honestly how the hybrid technology works, what you notice in practice and who it is worth it for.

Two devices in one: the hybrid trick

Most cool boxes force you to choose. A cheap thermo-electric box is light and economical, but only cools about twenty degrees below the outside temperature. A compressor box cools well below zero, but is expensive and uses more power. The HybridCool combines both worlds in one cabinet.

On the road, via the car's 12V socket, it runs thermo-electrically and cools up to 20 °C below ambient. At 28 °C in the car your contents sit around 8 °C, fine for meat, dairy and drinks in transit. At the campsite you plug it into 230V and it switches to the compressor: continuously adjustable from +10 down to -15 °C. On mains power this cool box is a genuine freezer: ice cubes, ice creams for the kids and frozen food are all possible.

The specifications

Capacity 41 litres, with an internal height of 35.5 cm so even 1.5-litre bottles stand upright. External dimensions 47 × 54 × 47 cm (h×l×w), weight 18.5 kg empty. Connections 12V (thermo-electric) and 230V (compressor, +10 to -15 °C, stepless).

Noise level 40 dB (comparable to a quiet fridge), energy label F, power draw 0.25 A on 230V and 4.83 A on 12V. Lid with magnetic closure and rubber seal, integrated handles. Recommended price 349 euros, currently 199 euros. On Obelink the box scores 9.5/10 across 863 reviews.

In use: capacity, build and noise

41 litres sounds modest, but the clever internal height makes the difference: bottles stand upright and a weekend shop for two or three people fits easily. The build feels premium: sturdy integrated handles and a lid with magnetic closure and seal that keeps the cold in and the heat out.

On the compressor it produces around 40 dB. That is audible if you put your ear right next to it, but in an awning or camper you will sleep just fine. This is an appliance built to last seasons.

The downsides: weight and power use

Honesty first: it is heavy. 18.5 kg empty means you move it full best with two people or a trolley, not a box you casually carry to the beach. And the energy label is F: in freezer mode it draws power, which you notice at a campsite with an expensive or limited electricity plan.

Bear in mind too that the 12V mode cools relatively, it does not freeze. On a scorching 35 °C day you will not get below 15 °C on 12V. For genuinely cold contents on the road, pre-cool the box thoroughly on 230V and let that cold ride along.

Value and our verdict

From 349 to 199 euros is a serious discount, and you effectively get two appliances: a 12V travel cool box and a 230V mini freezer. Standalone compressor freezer boxes often start at 250 to 400 euros. That also explains the high rating of 9.5/10 across hundreds of reviews.

Our verdict: 8.7/10. The HybridCool KB-7645 is a top-class camping cool box at a sensible price. Do not expect a featherweight box and account for the power use in freezer mode. But if you have a camper, caravan or fixed pitch with 230V, this is an excellent buy that saves your ice-cream summer.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Tristar HybridCool also freeze?+

Yes, but only on 230V. On mains power the compressor runs and the temperature is continuously adjustable down to -15 °C, so it works as a freezer. On 12V (on the road) it cools thermo-electrically to about 20 °C below ambient.

How heavy is the KB-7645 and how much fits in it?+

Empty the box weighs 18.5 kg and the capacity is 41 litres. Thanks to the 35.5 cm internal height, bottles up to 1.5 litres stand upright.

What is the difference between the 12V and 230V modes?+

On 12V the box runs thermo-electrically: light and economical, but cools only relatively (up to 20 °C below ambient). On 230V the compressor runs: stronger and adjustable from +10 to -15 °C, suitable for freezing.
